Thirteen Years at the Russian Court

description:

A memoir by the Swiss-born French tutor to the children of Nicholas II.

Illustrated with 59 black and white photos. Includes index.

unique features:

Gilliard enjoyed intimate access to the private life of Nicholas II's family rivaled only by Anna Vyrubova, and accompanied the Romanovs into exile as far as Ekaterinburg. His is one of only two first hand accounts of life in the governor's mansion in Tobolsk.

in my opinion:

Possibly the best first hand account of the last imperial family. Gilliard is valuable for his precision and observation, as well as his attention to matters both political and personal.
