in my opinion:

Because it comprises an entire, uncut year, this is probably one of the best resources for gaining a sense of context and continuity regarding the life of the tsar's immediate family prior to the tumult of WWI and the revolution. As an academic reference this volume has some shortcomings (i.e.: lack of index,  limited annotations and biographical index), but for a glimpse into the daily domestic routine of the imperial family, it's a treasure.
